Abu Dhabi Oilfield Power Generation Project

Project Case · Oil & Gas Power Assurance
Abu Dhabi Oilfield Power Generation Project
United Arab Emirates · Abu Dhabi Onshore Oilfield Development — Guaranteeing zero-interruption diesel power for drilling, EOR and camp operations in extreme desert conditions.
01 · Tendering Purpose & Process
Why the project was tendered and how the procurement was conducted.
Tendering Purpose
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)-affiliated operator launched an international open tender to secure a reliable, long-term diesel power generation package (prime + standby) for a new onshore oilfield development block. Core objectives: support drilling rigs, electrical-submersible-pump (ESP) EOR clusters and worker camps with stable, emission-compliant power in a harsh inland desert environment.
Tender Process
The two-stage ICB process ran through 2022–2023: (1) pre-qualification screening on HSE, international certifications and regional service capability; (2) technical & commercial bidding evaluated on fuel efficiency, redundancy design, noise/NOx compliance, lifecycle OPEX and local-content (ICV) commitment. Shortlisted vendors underwent site visits and reference-plant inspections.
02 · Post-Award Objectives
What the client required once the contract was awarded.
- Deliver a total prime-power capacity of 48.5 MW across distributed wellpad and camp sites.
- Achieve N+1 redundancy with intelligent parallel control to eliminate single-point outages.
- Comply with UAE environmental limits: noise ≤ 75 dB(A) @ 1 m and NOx/PM under local permitting thresholds.
- Withstand inland desert conditions: 55 °C+ summer ambient, sandstorms (PM10 peaks) and limited water for cooling.
- Establish a 24/7 local service footprint with guaranteed spare-parts availability to protect oil production uptime.
03 · Situation Before Our Involvement
The pain points that drove the operator to seek a new power partner.
12+
Unplanned outages per year from aging, non-redundant gen-sets at wellpads.
≥ 4 h
Average response time for critical parts under the previous vendor arrangement.
~ 78 dB
Camp-site noise levels triggering worker comfort and permitting complaints.
—
No remote monitoring; faults discovered only after production impact.

Commercial Structure
Energy-as-a-Service option with performance guarantees, availability-linked payment terms and a 10-year lifecycle OPEX model to lower upfront CAPEX.
06 · Implementation & Execution
How the solution was deployed on site.
Phase 1 · Engineering & Factory Acceptance
Site power-balance study, paralleling-scheme design and FAT at the factory; desert duty validation on cooling, dust and transient response.
Phase 2 · Modular Shipping & Mobilisation
Units shipped in modular split packages to overcome remote-pad access limits; on-site bolt-together assembly, fuel-system integration and commissioning.
Phase 3 · Parallel Commissioning & Cutover
Step-load and black-start tests; paralleling controller tuned to ≤ ±2% voltage deviation; seamless transfer verified with site UPS systems.
Phase 4 · Handover & Managed Services
Cloud O&M go-live, operator training (Arabic/English), spare-parts stocking in Dubai and transition to 24/7 managed-service monitoring.
07 · Results & Outcomes
Measured outcomes 12 months after full handover.
99.97%
Power availability across wellpad clusters.
↓ 82%
Reduction in unplanned outages vs. prior setup.
≤ 74 dB
Camp-site noise, within UAE permitting limits.
↓ 31%
Reduction in annual O&M cost versus baseline.
The 48.5 MW NovArk Power package has operated continuously since commissioning, supporting drilling and EOR loads with zero production-impact outages. The operator renewed the managed-service contract and expanded coverage to two additional satellite pads, citing reliability, compliance confidence and measurable OPEX savings as the reasons for extension.
